Tolan was a sword move. The hilt's pommel would be held at one's midsection with the blade thirty degrees up, and would be brought around the back of the body and slashed at high velocity. Combining a defensive parry with a powerful attack, the tolan was a reliable counterattack to an opponent's slash aimed towards the torso.
The name tolan also referred to a solo sword training exercise in which an apprentice practiced sequences of moves against imaginary opponents.
